Last week we talked about my visit to the Hoh Rain Forest, a temperate rain forest on the western edge of the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State in the Olympic National Park. The stars of the show are the old growth trees and the mosses that hang from them, but let's not overlook the understory and the wildflowers that grow there.

The Native American name "Hoh" means "fast white woman" - uh, water - I meant to say "fast white water"! Anyway, who wouldn't want to visit a place with fast white water!

Go to the desert, and chances are you're going to see a lot of cactus. The only question is what kind, and that depends on where you are. Last month I drove to southern Arizona to see what I could find.

Sometimes you just have to get in the car and go. That's the way I felt as I watched report after report get posted on the desert wildflower sites that I monitor. The poppies are peaking NOW!

Live or work in downtown Seattle? This is the last week to see my exhibit at Collins Pub in Pioneer Square.

Everybody's heard of South Park, right? It's the adult animated sitcom with the four offensive little boys. But did you know there's an old neighborhood in Seattle called South Park?

Last week we visited Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve, and an important part of that reserve is the town of Coupeville, the county seat of Island County, Washington. Today we'll take a look Washington's second oldest town and the home of world famous Penn Cove mussels.

Humans like to collect things. It seems to be in our nature. When I was a kid I collected Matchbox® cars, and I think I still have them somewhere, but these days I collect something that takes up very little space. I collect stamps. No, not that kind of stamp.

"When astronauts return from their first landing on the moon and report their findings, will they describe the sort of terrain that you see here at Craters of the Moon National Monument?" These words from the 1961 version of the National Park Service brochure introduce the reader to an alien landscape, one I was to revisit after over 50 years.

On my recent trip to Yellowstone National Park, I made no secret of the fact that I was looking for wolves. OK, I was looking for any wildlife I could find, as well as nice landscapes, but my primary objective was to see the wolves. And see them I did. Kind of.

One of the species on my list of things to find on my Yellowstone trip was the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. I didn't have to look far.

When people think of steaming vents and boiling water at Yellowstone, they usually think of the famous geyser, Old Faithful. But Yellowstone is not a one-trick pony, and the super-heated underground water at the park's original entrance has a completely different way of inspiring awe in park visitors.

I went to Yellowstone hoping to get close enough to a pack of wolves to get some good images, but knowing that realistically, my chances of getting close to other types of wildlife were much better. Of course, "close" is one of those relative terms, and I wasn't quite prepared for the kind of "close" I experienced one afternoon.

A bison jam. Now there's something you don't see every day. Sure, you know all about traffic jams, especially if you live in a car-clogged city like Seattle. But a bison Jam? That sounds more like a Montana/Wyoming kind of problem. And so it is.

The last time I visited Yellowstone National Park was with my parents in 1962. Even as a preschooler I couldn't help but notice the wonder of Old Faithful as it erupted in a column of steam and boiling water, just like clockwork. It was time to go back to Yellowstone, but this time, it would be in the middle of winter.

Hetch Hetchy. What a funny name, I thought. What is it and why would I want to go to a photo workshop there, with gorgeous Yosemite Valley right down the road?
