Many of my images are available for commercial licensing through industry leader Getty Images, but for various reasons I will always have some images that are not available via Getty. So, in order to make my other images available for licensing, I now offer them through 500px Prime, a premium marketplace for inspiring and evocative photography from the world-class 500px community.
500px is an online photography community much like Flickr, where photographers can post images and then comment on or favorite images from other photographers. But while Flickr prohibits any commercial activity, 500px is designed to sell image licenses for commercial use, making it potentially much more useful to photographers.
Licensing via 500px may also be less expensive than from Getty Images, and it certainly has the potential to be more profitable to the photographer. But it’s not as well known to designers and ad agencies as Getty, so time will tell if there’s enough traffic to make it worthwhile.
One advantage it has is that images posted there for sale are available immediately, whereas it usually takes well over a month for one of my images to be accepted and searchable on gettyimages.com. This could be an important factor if someone wants to license a new image and can’t afford to wait that long for it to be available for sale.
So, say you’re a designer, and you see an image on my website that you wish to license. How does this work?
While browsing the images in my Image Gallery, look below each image and you will see several small icons that are links to other locations. Look for either the Getty Images icon, shown in the first image, or the 500px icon, shown in the second image.
Click on one of those to be redirected to the licensing page for that image, such as this one for my image on 500px:
And what if you don’t see either of those icons? I’ll be working to see that all of my images are eventually available somewhere for licensing, but in the meantime, if you find one you’d like that’s not available yet, just contact me, and I’ll get it set up for you quickly.
So, I know this isn’t going to be useful to all of you, but I wanted folks to be aware that I’m making an effort to insure that all of my images can be easily licensed if necessary. Next week’s topic will be a little more useful to some of you – I promise!
